- Students find figurative phrases, determine what they mean, and connect them to details in the text. They explain how each phrase affects imagery, mood, or understanding.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students point to a figurative phrase and explain its intended meaning. They describe how it builds an image, creates a feeling, or reveals a character’s traits.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat figurative phrases as literal facts. They may correctly name a simile or metaphor but fail to explain what it adds to the passage.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Read “The wind whispered through the trees.” Explain what “whispered” suggests and how it shapes the scene.
