What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students find the smaller base word inside words with endings such as “s,” “es,” “ed,” and “ing.” They use those word forms correctly when speaking or writing about grade-level topics.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can find the base word in forms such as “looks,” “looked,” and “looking.” They can choose and use the correct form in a clear sentence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may call the whole word the base, such as naming “jumped” instead of “jump.” They may remove letters that belong to the base or misuse endings, such as “playding” or “two cat.”
How to Assess It
- Give students the words “plants,” “planted,” and “planting.” Ask them to circle the base word, underline each ending, and use one word in a sentence.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs word cards such as “jump” and ending tiles “s,” “ed,” and “ing,” then have them build and read each form.
Ask students to explain how “The bird lands” differs from “The bird landed,” using a picture for each sentence.
Play Base Word Match by having students pair cards such as “help,” “helps,” “helped,” and “helping” under one heading.
Read a classroom schedule and highlight related forms such as “start,” “starts,” and “started,” then discuss when each form fits.
