What This Standard Means
Students need to write often in history, science, and technical classes, not just in English. They should handle quick responses, lab explanations, source analyses, process descriptions, and longer pieces that include planning, feedback, and revision.
Mastery looks like choosing the right format and tone for the task, using subject vocabulary accurately, and improving a draft based on evidence or feedback. Students often get stuck when they write generic summaries, skip revision, or do not adjust for audience, such as writing a lab report like a personal reflection.
Ways to Teach It
- Hands-on activity: Give students a data table or primary source set, then have them draft, revise, and submit a one-page explanation.
- Prompt: Explain the same event or result twice, once for a classmate and once for a younger student.
- Quick assessment: Collect a five-minute exit write that uses two subject terms and answers the day’s question.
- Real-world connection: Have students write a brief workplace-style email explaining a technical problem, historical decision, or science result to a supervisor.
What This Unlocks
Mastery here sets students up for these next.
