What This Standard Means

Students need to write a story that moves clearly from beginning to end. They should create a situation, introduce characters, organize events in a logical order, and use dialogue, pacing, description, and reflection to build the experience.

Mastery looks like a narrative that feels intentional, not just a list of events. The reader can picture the setting, understand the conflict, and follow the character’s choices. Students often get stuck with weak openings, flat dialogue, rushed endings, or too much summary instead of scenes.

Ways to Teach It

  • Give students a photo card and have them write a one-page scene with setting details, dialogue, and a clear change for the character.
  • Ask students: What choice did your character make, and how did that choice change the direction of the story?
  • Have students highlight one line of dialogue, one sensory detail, and one sentence that moves the plot forward.
  • Read a short personal narrative from a magazine or blog, then mark where the writer slows down the moment.
