What This Standard Means
Students need to write pieces that make sense for the assignment. They choose a structure that fits, such as opinion, informative, or narrative. They also need to add enough details, use a clear order, and write in a voice that fits the reader and purpose.
Mastery looks like a focused piece where each part has a job. The reader can tell what the writer is trying to do and follow the ideas easily. Students often get stuck by adding random details, using the wrong format, or forgetting who they are writing for.
Ways to Teach It
- Give students three mixed-up paragraphs from a sample essay, and have them cut, sort, label, and justify the best order.
- Ask students to rewrite the same school announcement for a principal, a kindergartner, and a best friend.
- Use a one-minute exit slip: What is your purpose, who is your audience, and what structure will you use?
- Show a restaurant review and a recipe, then compare how each one changes organization and details for its purpose.
