What This Standard Means

Students need to write pieces that make sense for the assignment. A story should build events clearly. An opinion should state a view and support it. An informational piece should explain the topic in an organized way. They also need to think about who will read it and why they are writing.

Mastery looks like a clear beginning, middle, and end, with details that fit the purpose. Students often get stuck by listing ideas in random order, adding off-topic details, or using the same voice for every audience. They may know facts or ideas, but need help shaping them into a clear piece.

Ways to Teach It

  • Give students three mixed-up paragraph strips from a short article, then have them reorder and label the introduction, details, and conclusion.
  • Ask students to write the same message to a principal and to a best friend, then compare word choice and tone.
  • Use an exit slip with one prompt: What is your purpose, who is your audience, and what detail best supports your main idea?
  • Have students revise a cafeteria suggestion letter so it is polite, clear, and organized for the school principal.
