ELA5th GradeText Types and Purposes

The Standard

Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons and information

Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts · Writing Standards

What This Standard Means

Students need to write a clear opinion, back it up with reasons, and use facts, examples, or text evidence to make the case. They should organize ideas in a way that makes sense, use linking words, and end with a conclusion that fits the opinion.

Mastery looks like a focused piece where every reason connects to the opinion and is supported by specific information. Students often get stuck giving feelings instead of reasons, repeating the same idea, or dropping in evidence without explaining how it proves the point.

Ways to Teach It

  • Give pairs three short articles on school lunches, then have them sort facts under two possible opinions using sticky notes.
  • Ask students to write: Which character made the best choice, and what evidence from the text proves it?
  • Have students underline the opinion once, circle three reasons, and box one piece of evidence for each reason.
  • Show two product reviews online, then have students identify the opinion, reasons, and information used to persuade buyers.
