CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.4.1

ELA4th GradeText Types and Purposes

The Standard

Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons and information

Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts · Writing Standards

What This Standard Means

Students need to write a clear opinion about a topic or text, then back it up with reasons and facts or examples. They should introduce the topic, state their point of view, group related ideas, use linking words, and end with a conclusion that fits.

Mastery looks like a reader can tell what the student believes and why. The reasons are different from each other, not repeated. Evidence actually supports the opinion. Students often get stuck writing only feelings, using weak reasons like “because it is good,” or ending suddenly without wrapping up the argument.

Ways to Teach It

  • Give pairs opinion cards and evidence strips, then have them match each opinion to three strong supporting reasons.
  • Ask students to write: Which character made the best choice, and what two text details prove it?
  • Use a one-minute exit ticket: opinion, reason one, reason two, and one linking word.
  • Show a school lunch menu and have students write a short opinion to the principal with two practical reasons.
