What This Standard Means
Kindergarten students need to look at a picture in an informational text and say how it connects to the words. They should name what the picture shows, such as an animal, tool, place, person, or idea, and match it to a part of the text with teacher help.
Mastery looks like a child pointing to an illustration and saying, “This shows the penguin’s eggs,” after hearing that part read aloud. Students often get stuck by describing only what they see, without linking it to the words. They may also miss diagrams, labels, or small details that carry information.
Ways to Teach It
- Read a simple nonfiction page, cover the words, and have students place sticky notes on the picture showing details they hear in the text.
- Ask, “What part of the words does this picture help us understand?” and have students answer with the sentence frame, “The picture shows...”
- Show one page and ask students to point to the picture detail that matches a sentence you read aloud.
- Use a school lunch menu photo and text, then have students match each food word to the picture item it names.
