ELAKindergartenCraft and Structure

The Standard

Identify the front cover, back cover, and title page of a book.

Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts · Reading Standards for Informational Text

What This Standard Means

Kindergarten students need to name and point to three book parts: front cover, back cover, and title page. They should know that the front cover usually shows the title and picture, the back cover is on the other side, and the title page is inside near the beginning.

Mastery looks like handling a real informational book and identifying each part without guessing. Students often mix up the front cover and title page because both may show the title. They may also call any inside page the title page, so use repeated practice with many books.

Ways to Teach It

  • Hands-on activity: Give partners an informational book and three sticky notes labeled front cover, back cover, and title page to place correctly.
  • Discussion prompt: Ask, “How can you tell the front cover from the title page?” and have students explain using a book.
  • Quick assessment: Hand a student a new book and say, “Show me the back cover, the front cover, and the title page.”
  • Real-world connection: Show a library book and explain how the cover and title page help readers and librarians identify the book.
