ELA1st GradePhonics and Word Recognition

The Standard

Decode two-syllable words following basic patterns by breaking the words into syllables.

Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts

What This Standard Means

Students need to split simple two-syllable words into parts and read each part to say the whole word. They should work with common patterns like rab-bit, pic-nic, ti-ger, and ba-by. They need to look for vowels, clap syllables, divide the word, then blend the syllables smoothly.

Mastery looks like reading unfamiliar two-syllable words without guessing from the first letter or picture. Students often get stuck by splitting after every letter, missing vowel sounds, or reading each syllable but not blending them back together.

Ways to Teach It

  • Have students cut word cards like rabbit, tiger, picnic, and baby into syllables, then rebuild and read each word aloud.
  • Ask, “Where would you split this word, and how do you know?” while students mark vowels and syllable breaks on whiteboards.
  • Show five two-syllable words and have students clap, split, and read each one in a one-minute check.
  • Use lunch menu words like pancake, hotdog, and carrot to practice finding syllables in words students see at school.
