What This Standard Means

Students need to notice how words connect and how similar words can feel a little different. They sort objects, pictures, and words into groups, name opposites, act out verbs, and talk about shades of meaning like big, huge, and tiny.

Mastery looks like a child explaining why two words belong together, choosing a better word for a picture or action, and using opposites correctly. Students often get stuck when words are close in meaning, or when they know a word in speech but cannot explain it yet.

Ways to Teach It

  • Hands-on: Give picture cards for animals, foods, and toys, then have students sort them and explain one match to a partner.
  • Prompt: Ask, “Which word is stronger, happy or excited?” and have students draw a face for each word.
  • Quick assessment: Show three pictures and ask students to name two that go together, then tell why.
  • Real-world connection: During snack, ask students to compare words like crunchy, soft, sweet, and sour using the foods they are eating.
