The Standard
Demonstrate understanding of word relationships and nuances in word meanings.

What This Standard Means
Students need to notice how words are connected and how similar words can carry different shades of meaning. They should sort words into groups, explain why words belong together, and choose more exact words when speaking or writing.
Mastery looks like a student saying why “stomp” is stronger than “walk,” or why “tiny” is more specific than “small.” Students often get stuck by giving only definitions, not comparing words. They may also sort by first letter or sound instead of meaning.
Ways to Teach It
- Hands-on: Give students word cards like run, jog, sprint, stroll, and have them place them on a weakest-to-strongest line.
- Prompt: Ask, “Which word fits best, mad, annoyed, or furious, and what clue in the sentence helped you choose?”
- Quick assessment: Show three related words and have students circle the strongest one, then write one sentence using it correctly.
- Real-world connection: Read a lunch menu or weather report and discuss why writers choose words like crisp, chilly, warm, or hot.
