The Standard

Use abstract nouns (e.g., childhood).

Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts

What This Standard Means

Students need to recognize and use nouns that name ideas, feelings, qualities, or states, not people, places, or things they can touch. They should be able to spot words like honesty, bravery, freedom, joy, and childhood, then use them in clear sentences.

Mastery looks like choosing a fitting abstract noun and using it naturally in speaking and writing. Students often mix up abstract nouns with adjectives, such as brave and bravery, or choose a vague word that does not match the sentence. They may also need help seeing that these nouns still name something, even if it cannot be held.

Ways to Teach It

  • Sort word cards into concrete nouns and abstract nouns, then have partners explain two tricky choices aloud.
  • Use the prompt, “Which is harder to show, courage or happiness?” and have students answer using both abstract nouns in sentences.
  • Give five sentences with one blank each, and ask students to choose the best abstract noun from a word bank.
  • Connect to character traits by naming the abstract noun a book character shows, such as kindness, greed, or patience.
