CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.2.4a
The Standard
Use sentence-level context as a clue to the meaning of a word or phrase.
Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts
What This Standard Means
Students need to figure out an unknown word by using the other words in the same sentence. They should look for clues such as actions, descriptions, examples, or words that show feeling. They also need to explain which part of the sentence helped them.
Mastery looks like a student making a sensible guess, checking it in the sentence, and saying, “I know because...” Students often grab a random meaning, skip the whole sentence, or rely only on pictures. Some need practice noticing clue words right before or after the unknown word.
Ways to Teach It
- Give pairs sentence strips with one underlined word, then have them highlight the clue words and write a kid-friendly meaning.
- Ask, “What words in the sentence helped you figure it out?” after reading a short paragraph aloud.
- Show one sentence with an unknown word, and have students circle clues, choose a meaning, and explain it in one sentence.
- Use a cafeteria menu sentence like, “The spicy chili made Mia reach for water,” to connect context clues to everyday reading.
