CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.1.1c
ELA1st GradeConventions of Standard English
The Standard
Use singular and plural nouns with matching verbs in basic sentences (e.g., He hops; We hop).
Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts
What This Standard Means
Students need to match one noun with a verb that sounds right, and more than one noun with the correct verb form. They should hear and say the difference in simple sentences like one dog runs and two dogs run.
Mastery looks like students speaking, reading, and writing short sentences where the subject and verb agree. Many first graders overgeneralize the s ending, so they may write the cats runs or the boy run. They also get confused when the subject is a pronoun, especially he, she, they, and we.
Ways to Teach It
- Use picture cards of one item and many items, then have students build matching sentences with noun and verb word cards.
- Ask students to finish the frame, One ___ ___, but two ___ ___, using animals, classroom objects, or people.
- Read five short sentences aloud, and students show thumbs up if the noun and verb match, thumbs down if they do not.
- Have students describe what one classmate does and what two classmates do during recess, lunch, or cleanup.
