Math4th GradeComputation and Estimation

The Standard

Apply strategies (e.g., rounding, compatible numbers, place value) and algorithms, including the standard algorithm, to estimate and determine the quotient of two whole numbers, given a one-digit divisor and a two- or three-digit dividend, with and without remainders.*

Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will estimate, represent, solve, and justify solutions to single-step and multistep problems, including those in context, using multiplication with whole numbers, and single-step problems, including those in context, using division with whole numbers; and recall with automaticity the multiplication facts through 12 × 12 and the corresponding division facts.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students estimate quotients using rounding, compatible numbers, or place value. They calculate exact quotients for two-digit and three-digit dividends, including problems with remainders. They check whether answers are reasonable.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students choose a useful estimate, then find the exact quotient with an efficient method or the standard algorithm. They place quotient digits correctly and write valid remainders. They use multiplication to check the result.

Common Misconceptions

Students may divide each digit separately without regrouping or place quotient digits in the wrong place. They may report a remainder equal to or greater than the divisor. Some confuse an estimate with the exact answer.

How to Assess It

Ask: “Estimate and solve 745 ÷ 6. Show your estimate, exact quotient with remainder, and a multiplication check.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use base-ten blocks to model 156 ÷ 4, regrouping hundreds and tens, then record each step beside the model.

  2. Ask students to explain why 720 is a useful compatible number for estimating 738 ÷ 6.

  3. Draw dividend and divisor cards, then earn points for a reasonable estimate, correct quotient, and valid remainder.

  4. Pack 287 cans into boxes of eight, then find the estimated and exact numbers of full boxes and leftover cans.
