Virginia SOL 4.CE.2.f
The Standard
Determine common factors and the greatest common factor of no more than three numbers.
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will estimate, represent, solve, and justify solutions to single-step and multistep problems, including those in context, using multiplication with whole numbers, and single-step problems, including those in context, using division with whole numbers; and recall with automaticity the multiplication facts through 12 × 12 and the corresponding division facts.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students generate factor pairs for each given whole number. They compare the lists, find values that divide every number with no remainder, and select the largest shared value.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can organize complete factor lists or factor pairs for two or three numbers. The student marks factors in every list, identifies the largest, and checks that it divides each number evenly.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may list multiples instead of factors, or stop before finding every factor pair. They may choose the first shared factor they notice rather than the greatest. With three numbers, they may select a factor shared by only two.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: List the factors of 18, 24, and 30, circle the shared factors, and identify the greatest shared factor.

Ways to Teach It
Give students 12, 18, and 24 counters; build equal-row arrays, record possible row lengths, and circle the greatest shared length.
Ask students to write whether Lena is correct when she claims the greatest common factor of 16 and 24 is 4, then explain.
Play Factor Match: students draw two number cards, list each factor set, and score a point for finding the greatest shared factor.
Have students find the greatest number of identical bags that can be made using 24 apples, 36 oranges, and 48 granola bars.
