Virginia SOL 3.PFA.1.e
The Standard
Investigate and explain the connection between two different representations of the same increasing or decreasing pattern.
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will identify, describe, extend, and create increasing and decreasing patterns (limited to addition and subtraction of whole numbers), including those in context, using various representations.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare a pattern shown in two forms, such as a picture, table, number sequence, or number line. They match corresponding stages and explain how the starting value and change rule appear in both forms.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can match each stage in a picture, table, or number sequence with the corresponding stage in another display. The student names the starting value and change rule, then uses both to explain the match.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may compare how the displays look instead of comparing their values. They may match stages out of order or treat the starting value as the change rule. Some notice that values increase or decrease but cannot state how much they change.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Show stages 1 through 4 with values 5, 8, 11, and 14 beside a number line marking those values. Ask students to name the rule and explain how each stage matches the number line.

Ways to Teach It
Give students connecting cubes to build towers of 3, 5, 7, and 9, then record each stage in a table.
Ask, “How do the picture and number list show the same change, and what matches at each stage?”
Play Pattern Match by pairing sequence cards with matching table cards, then have partners name the starting value and change rule.
Track plant heights of 6, 8, 10, and 12 centimeters, then show the data with a bar model and number list.
