Virginia SOL 1.MG.2.c

Math1st GradeMeasurement and Geometry

The Standard

Draw and name the plane figure (circle, square, rectangle, triangle) when given information about the number of sides, vertices, and angles.

Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will describe, sort, draw, and name plane figures (circles, triangles, squares, and rectangles), and compose larger plane figures by combining simple plane figures.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use counts of sides, vertices, and angles to decide which plane figure fits. They draw the figure and name it as a circle, triangle, square, or rectangle.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students use the clues to draw a closed figure with the correct number of straight sides, vertices, and angles. They name the figure and explain that a square and rectangle can have the same counts.

Common Misconceptions

Students may count a circle’s curved edge as a side or think it has vertices. They may also think every four-sided figure is a square, or miss that squares and rectangles share the same counts.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: “Draw and name two different figures that each have 4 sides, 4 vertices, and 4 angles.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give students pipe cleaners and clue cards, then have them build, draw, and name each matching figure.

  2. Ask, “How are a square and rectangle alike, and how are they different?” Students draw both and write one comparison.

  3. Play shape clue bingo by calling counts of sides, vertices, and angles while students cover matching figures.

  4. Have students find a clock, window, tile, and sign, then sketch and name the plane figure each object shows.
