What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students find the names of the writer and artist on a book cover or title page. They tell how each person contributes to the book.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students point to the correct names on a book cover or title page. They explain that the author writes the words and the illustrator creates the pictures.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think the author is always the person reading the book aloud. They may also think one person cannot write and illustrate the same book.
How to Assess It
- Show a book cover and title page. Ask, “Who wrote the words, who made the pictures, and where did you find each name?”
