What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students find the names of the writer and artist on a book cover or title page. They tell how each person contributes to the book.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students point to the correct names on a book cover or title page. They explain that the author writes the words and the illustrator creates the pictures.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think the author is always the person reading the book aloud. They may also think one person cannot write and illustrate the same book.

How to Assess It

Show a book cover and title page. Ask, “Who wrote the words, who made the pictures, and where did you find each name?”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a picture book and sticky notes to mark the author’s name, illustrator’s name, words, and pictures.

  2. Read a book’s credits, then ask, “How did the author and illustrator each help tell this story?”

  3. Play Role Sort with cards showing tasks such as writing sentences, drawing characters, choosing words, and painting settings.

  4. Examine a class library book and discuss how its writer and artist worked together to make a book people can read.
