What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students give a short oral report or state an opinion with a clear main idea. They select relevant evidence and explain how it supports that idea.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students state the main idea or opinion early and present relevant facts, examples, or quotations. They explain how each piece of evidence supports their point and speak in a clear order.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may list facts without explaining how they support the main idea. They may use personal beliefs, repeated claims, or unrelated details as evidence.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to give a 60-second response to “Should school start later?” Require a clear opinion, two supporting facts, and an explanation connecting each fact to the opinion.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups a claim and six evidence cards; students sort them by strength, then use the best two in a one-minute presentation.
Ask, “Should sixth graders have homework every night?” Students write a claim, choose two facts, and explain each connection before speaking.
Play Evidence Match: one student draws a main idea card, and teammates race to select and justify the most relevant evidence card.
Students present a two-minute recommendation for a school lunch change, using menu data and student survey results as evidence.
