What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students place a colon between the hour and minutes when writing a time. They also use a colon after a complete statement that introduces a list.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students write times such as 8:15 and 12:05 correctly. They use a colon only when a complete statement introduces a list.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may use a comma instead of a colon in a time. They may write 2:5 instead of 2:05. They may also place a colon after an incomplete phrase, such as “I packed: shoes and socks.”
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Correct these sentences: “Practice begins at 3.30.” “I need: paper, glue, and scissors.” “Bring three supplies paper, glue, and scissors.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs clock cards and sentence strips, then have them place colon tiles where they belong and explain each choice.
Ask students to write two sentences explaining when a colon belongs before a list and when it does not.
Play Colon Check: teams correct time and list examples on mini whiteboards, earning a point for each correct explanation.
Have students create a one-day event schedule with exact times and a supply list introduced by a complete statement.
