What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students name a clear topic, then explain it with accurate facts, examples, definitions, and details. They group related information so the reader can understand the topic.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student writes a focused paragraph that teaches the reader about one topic. The paragraph includes accurate, related facts and specific details arranged in a clear order.

Common Misconceptions

Students may state opinions instead of giving accurate information. They may list unrelated facts, repeat the same idea, or use vague details that do not explain the topic.

How to Assess It

Give students a four-item fact box about frogs. Prompt: “Write one paragraph explaining how a frog grows, using at least three facts and two linking words.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs topic cards and fact strips, then have them sort related facts and build an informative paragraph on chart paper.

  2. Ask students to write: “Explain how to stay safe during a thunderstorm using facts and specific details.”

  3. Play Detail Detective by having teams replace vague sentences with precise facts, examples, or definitions.

  4. Have students create a one-page visitor guide explaining a school location, such as the library, cafeteria, or playground.
