What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read or listen to two cultural retellings of one familiar tale. They identify how the people, places, and key events are alike and different, using details from both texts.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students accurately sort details about characters, settings, and events from both texts. They explain a meaningful similarity and difference using evidence from each version.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may list details from each story without explaining how they match or differ. They may confuse plot with setting or focus only on illustrations. Some may treat one version as correct instead of recognizing both as valid retellings.
How to Assess It
- Give students a three-part exit ticket: name one shared detail, one different detail, and evidence from each story. Ask them to label each detail as character, setting, or plot.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs character, setting, and event cards from two Cinderella retellings to sort onto a floor Venn diagram.
Ask, “How does each main character solve the problem, and what does that show about the two stories?”
Play Same or Different: read one story detail, then students hold up Same, Different, or Both cards and explain their choice.
Compare two community versions of a familiar tale, then mark details that reflect each place, custom, or value.
