- Students recognize what shortened forms such as Mr., Dr., St., and Jan. mean. They use correct capital letters and periods when writing them.

- Students correctly match forms such as Mr., Dr., St., and Jan. with their full words. They write them with the expected capitals and periods in sentences.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may leave off the period or use a lowercase first letter. They may confuse shortened forms with contractions or shorten words in ways they have not seen.
How to Assess It
- Give the sentence, "Doctor Kim lives on Oak Street." Ask students to rewrite it using the correct shortened forms for Doctor and Street.
