What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use pronouns for unknown or unnamed people and things. They also use pronouns that point back to the sentence subject, choosing forms such as yourself or herself.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose a pronoun that fits whether the sentence means an unknown person or an unknown thing. They match reflexive pronouns to the subject, as in “Maya helped herself.”
Common Misconceptions
- Students may use “anything” for a person or “anybody” for an object. They may mismatch reflexive pronouns, as in “Lena dressed himself,” or write “Myself made lunch.”
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Did ___ leave a lunchbox?” and “Maya taught ___ to whistle.” Students fill each blank and explain one choice.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs sentence cards and pronoun tiles labeled anybody, anything, yourself, himself, and herself, then have them complete and read each sentence.
Ask students to write two sentences about classroom jobs, one using anybody or anything and one using a reflexive pronoun.
Play Pronoun Match by having students pair subject cards such as Maya or Ben with herself or himself before completing a sentence.
Read simple safety directions, then have students add fitting pronouns, such as “Do not cut ___” or “Can ___ help?”
