What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students talk, draw, dictate, or write about what they enjoy reading and creating. They name a specific reason, such as rhymes, pictures, facts, topics, or story types.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student names preferred books or writing activities and gives a clear reason. The student points to a feature such as rhyme, pictures, facts, humor, drawing, or storytelling.
Common Misconceptions
- Children may name a favorite book but cannot explain why they like it. They may confuse a topic, such as dinosaurs, with a genre, such as poetry.
How to Assess It
- Show a storybook, an animal facts book, and a poem. Ask each child to choose one and complete, “I prefer this because _____.”

Ways to Teach It

Ask, “Would you rather read a funny story or an animal fact book?” and record each child’s reason.
Play Preference Corners by labeling corners stories, poems, comics, and fact books, then invite children to choose and explain.
Create a class library request chart where children draw or label topics and book types they want available during reading time.
