What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students listen to a spoken word and say another word with the same ending sound. They may use familiar words or made-up words.

What Mastery Looks Like

The student hears a word and quickly says a word with the same ending sound. The student can produce both real and made-up rhyming words.

Common Misconceptions

Students may match the first sound, such as sun with sock. They may also name a related word, such as dog with cat, instead of matching ending sounds.

How to Assess It

Say, "Tell me one word that rhymes with cake and one word that rhymes with log." Accept real or made-up words with matching ending sounds.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give students picture cards and ask them to pair cards whose names rhyme, such as cat and hat.

  2. Ask, "What rhymes with bear?" Record responses, then have students explain which words sound the same at the end.

  3. Play rhyme toss by saying a word, tossing a beanbag, and asking the catcher to say a rhyme.

  4. Have students create silly rhyming names for classroom objects, such as chair-bear or clock-sock.
