What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify a shared archetype in works from separate historical periods. They compare what each version keeps, changes, or rejects, then connect those choices to the values and concerns of each era.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can trace specific traits, plot patterns, symbols, or conflicts across at least two versions. The student uses evidence from both and explains how historical context shapes the differences.

Common Misconceptions

Students may summarize both versions without making a direct comparison. They may treat a change in medium as proof of a different time period, or call any similar character an archetype. Some identify differences but do not explain what those differences reveal about each era.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: How does the newer version reshape the shared figure for its audience? State one similarity, one difference, and one contextual reason, using evidence from both works.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs scene cards from Homer’s Odyssey and a modern retelling, then have them match parallels and label what changed.

  2. Ask: Why does one era praise a hero’s trait while another era questions it? Require one detail from each version.

  3. Run a four-corners game where students classify paired details as retained, revised, rejected, or added, then defend each choice.

  4. Pair an image of Achilles with a current athlete profile, then have students annotate how each source defines courage, fame, and leadership.
