What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify key plot events, conflicts, and devices such as flashback and foreshadowing. They explain how those choices combine to shape what an audience expects and feels.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students trace how a device changes the meaning or pace of the plot. They use specific details to explain how conflict and structure build suspense, tension, or humor.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may label a flashback or foreshadowing without explaining its effect. They may confuse flashback with general background information or foreshadowing with any prediction. Some discuss conflict, plot, and devices separately instead of showing how they interact.
How to Assess It
- Give this prompt: “A character hears footsteps, remembers a warning, and finds a broken lock. Explain how these details work together to affect the reader.”

Ways to Teach It
Give groups cut-up scene cards to arrange, then have them mark where conflict and foreshadowing create the strongest suspense.
Ask students to write: How would removing the flashback change what the audience knows, expects, or feels?
Play Effect Match by pairing plot moments and device cards with suspense, tension, surprise, or humor cards, then require a spoken explanation.
Show a movie trailer and have students list three editing or story choices that create tension before revealing the conflict.
