What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students make sense of stories about real or imagined experiences, then tell or write their own. They include clear events, relevant details, and connections to other texts or their lives.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can retell events in order and explain a character’s experience using story details. The student can create a focused story with a beginning, middle, and end, then answer an audience question.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may list events without linking them into a clear sequence. They may copy a source story instead of adding original ideas, or name a connection without explaining it.
How to Assess It
- After a short read-aloud, ask students to write or record a new event that could fit the story and explain where it belongs.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs picture cards to sequence, then have them use puppets to retell the story and add one new event.
Ask students to write about a time they felt like a character, then share which story detail made the connection clear.
Play Story Circle, where each student adds one sentence that follows the previous event and keeps the same characters and setting.
Have students interview a family member about a memorable event, then turn the details into a short illustrated story.
