What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students change a base verb to fit the time and subject of a sentence. They add -d for past actions such as bake to baked, and -es for one present-tense doer, such as watch to watches.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students complete sentences with forms such as smiled and washes. They use time clues and the sentence subject to choose the right form and spelling.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may write bakeed instead of baked or watchs instead of watches. They may also use watches with plural subjects or apply -d to irregular verbs, writing goed.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket with two items: Yesterday, Mia ___ (smile); every morning, Ben ___ (wash) his cup. Students fill each blank and name the ending they added.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs verb cards and sentence mats labeled past action and one doer now; students add letter tiles to build each verb.
Compare Lena closes the gate and Lena closed the gate, then ask students what each ending tells the reader.
Play Verb Flip: students draw a base verb and a time or subject card, then write the matching form for a point.
Write a classroom job log with paired entries such as Maya closes the door and Maya closed the door.
