What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students preview a text before reading it closely. They use headings, section labels, visuals, and key words to find parts most useful for their purpose.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students quickly locate headings, introductions, conclusions, visuals, and repeated terms. They identify which sections deserve close reading based on a clear purpose or question.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may read every word instead of previewing quickly. They may notice bold print or headings without explaining which sections fit their reading purpose.
How to Assess It
- Give students two minutes to preview a short article. Ask them to mark three useful sections and explain why each deserves closer reading.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a printed article, sticky notes, and three minutes to flag sections that could answer a teacher-provided question.
Ask students to write: Which section would you read first for the author’s main claim, and what text feature guided you?
Run a preview race where teams locate a definition, key argument, counterclaim, and supporting chart without reading the full text.
Have students skim a college webpage or job posting and mark the sections needed to decide whether to apply.
