What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify the kinds of reading and writing they prefer. They explain their choices using details about topics, genres, formats, or techniques.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students clearly name reading and writing choices they enjoy. They give a specific reason, such as liking rhymes, animal facts, drawing labels, or writing funny stories.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name a favorite book without explaining why. They may confuse a topic, such as dinosaurs, with a genre, such as nonfiction.
How to Assess It
- Give an exit slip with this prompt: “I prefer reading or writing ___ because ___.” Ask students to include one topic, genre, format, or technique.
