What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students multiply each point's coordinate by its assigned weight, add the products, and divide by the total weight. They interpret how larger weights pull the result closer to particular points.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given two or more points and weights, a student computes the correct coordinate and places it on the line. The student checks that positive weights produce a location within the given range and explains which point has more influence.

Common Misconceptions

Students may average the coordinates without using the given weights. They may match weights to the wrong points or forget to divide by the total weight. Some assume the result must be the midpoint.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: Points A = -2 and B = 8 have weights 1 and 3, respectively. Find the weighted location, show your setup, and explain why it is closer to B.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Tape a number line to the floor, assign weight cards to marked points, and have students calculate and stand at the weighted location.

  2. Ask students to explain why doubling every weight leaves the weighted location unchanged, using numbers or a diagram.

  3. Give pairs point-and-weight cards, then award a point for each correct location and a second point for a valid estimate.

  4. Map towns along one highway and use their populations as weights to choose a location for a shared clinic.
