What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use the limit of a difference quotient to find a derivative at a point. They estimate derivatives from graphs and tables. They interpret derivatives as tangent slopes and instantaneous rates of change.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can write and evaluate a difference quotient as the interval approaches zero. They can estimate a derivative from a graph or table. They explain the derivative as tangent slope or instantaneous rate, with correct units and sign.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse f'(a) with f(a), or treat an average rate as an instantaneous rate. They may forget the limit in the difference quotient or make sign and substitution errors. Some assume every point on a graph has a derivative, including corners and jumps.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: For f(x) = x², use the limit definition to find f'(3), then explain its meaning on the graph. Check the result using f(2.9) = 8.41 and f(3.1) = 9.61.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Have students draw secant lines through two graph points, move one point closer, and measure how the slopes approach the tangent slope.

  2. Ask students to explain in writing why a speedometer shows a derivative rather than an average rate over an entire trip.

  3. Play a matching game with function graphs, derivative values, tangent lines, and numerical tables showing nearby input values.

  4. Give position data from a short bicycle ride and have students estimate speed at one time using values just before and after it.
