What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students gather information about one topic from a read-aloud, picture, video, or classroom observation. They remember a relevant detail and use it to answer a clear question.

What Mastery Looks Like

After a short read-aloud, picture study, or video, the student gives an accurate detail that answers the question. The student can respond by speaking, drawing, or labeling a picture.

Common Misconceptions

Students may guess from experience instead of using the information provided. They may recall a true detail that does not answer the question or mix up details from another topic.

How to Assess It

Read aloud, “Bees collect nectar from flowers and carry it to the hive.” Cover the sentence and ask, “What do bees collect from flowers?”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Let pairs study three labeled animal photos, cover them, then ask each pair one question about an animal’s body or home.

  2. Read a short book about frogs, then ask, “What is one fact you remember that explains where frogs live?”

  3. Play Fact Match by having students pair question cards with picture cards showing the correct answers.

  4. Study the school lunch menu, hide it, then ask students what food or drink will be served on a chosen day.
