CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.8.1
The Standard
Write arguments to support claims with clear reasons and relevant evidence.
Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts · Writing Standards
What This Standard Means
Students need to make a clear claim, give reasons that make sense, and use evidence that truly supports the point. They also need to organize the argument so a reader can follow it, explain how the evidence proves the claim, and use a tone that fits school writing.
Mastery looks like a focused argument with a strong claim, logical reasons, quoted or paraphrased evidence, and clear explanation after each piece of evidence. Students often get stuck choosing evidence that is only related, not supportive. They also tend to summarize the source instead of proving their point.
Ways to Teach It
- Give students a claim card, three evidence cards, and two distractors, then have them sort, justify, and build one argument paragraph.
- Ask students to write: Which school rule should change, and what evidence would convince a principal?
- Use an exit ticket with one claim and four evidence choices, asking students to pick the best one and explain why.
- Show a short product review, then have students identify the claim, reasons, evidence, and where the writer explains the proof.
