ELA7th GradeResearch to Build and Present Knowledge

The Standard

Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research.

Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts · Writing Standards

What This Standard Means

Students need to pull clear evidence from a novel, poem, article, speech, or other text and use it to support their own thinking. They should not drop in quotes and move on. They need to explain how the evidence proves a point, answers a question, or connects to a larger idea.

Mastery looks like a paragraph or short response with a claim, well-chosen evidence, and explanation in the student’s own words. Students often get stuck choosing evidence that is too long, too vague, or only loosely connected. They may also summarize instead of analyzing.

Ways to Teach It

  • Give pairs a short article and three claims, then have them highlight the best sentence to prove each claim.
  • Ask students to answer, “Which line best shows the character’s fear, and how do you know?”
  • Use an exit ticket with one claim, one quoted detail, and one sentence explaining the connection.
  • Have students read a product review and identify the evidence the writer uses to support the rating.
