ELA7th GradeText Types and Purposes

The Standard

Introduce a topic clearly, previewing what is to follow; organize ideas, concepts, and information, using strategies such as definition, classification, comparison/contrast, and cause/effect; include formatting (e.g., headings), graphics (e.g., charts, tables), and multimedia when useful to aiding comprehension.

What This Standard Means

Students need to set up an informative piece so readers know the topic and what will come next. They also need to choose an order that fits the information, such as defining terms first, grouping related ideas, comparing two things, or showing causes and effects.

Mastery looks like a clear introduction, logical sections, useful headings, and visuals that actually help the reader. Students often get stuck by writing a vague opening, listing facts in random order, adding headings after the fact, or using a chart or image that looks nice but does not explain anything.

Ways to Teach It

  • Give students a mixed-up article with cut-apart paragraphs, headings, and a chart, then have them rebuild the clearest order and explain why.
  • Ask students to write an opening paragraph that names a topic, previews three sections, and avoids starting with a question.
  • Use three sticky notes: topic, preview, organization; students check a partner’s introduction and mark what is present or missing.
  • Show a school lunch menu chart, then have students plan a short article explaining trends using headings and one helpful graphic.
