CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.5.2e
The Standard
Provide a concluding statement or section related to the information or explanation presented
Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts
What This Standard Means
Students need to end an informational piece in a way that clearly connects to what they explained. The ending should not feel random, rushed, or tacked on. It should remind the reader of the main idea and leave them with a clear final thought.
Mastery looks like a conclusion that fits the topic, uses different words from the introduction, and gives the piece a finished feel. Students often get stuck by writing “That is why…” every time, adding new facts at the end, or simply repeating the first sentence.
Ways to Teach It
- Give students three sample reports with the conclusions removed, then have them match and revise possible endings for each report.
- Prompt students to answer: What should your reader remember most after reading your explanation?
- Have students underline the main idea and circle the final sentence to check if they clearly connect.
- Show a short museum exhibit sign or kids’ news article and discuss how the final sentence wraps up the information.
