CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.4.3d
The Standard
Use concrete words and phrases and sensory details to convey experiences and events precisely.
Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts
What This Standard Means
Students need to choose words that help readers picture, hear, feel, smell, or taste what is happening in a narrative. They should replace vague words like nice, fun, bad, or went with specific nouns, verbs, adjectives, and sensory details that match the moment.
Mastery looks like a story scene where the reader can clearly imagine the event without extra explanation. Students often get stuck by listing too many adjectives, using feelings instead of evidence, or adding details that do not fit the action. Teach them to revise one sentence at a time.
Ways to Teach It
- Give students a bland sentence strip, then have them revise it using one strong verb and two sensory details.
- Ask students to write about a rainy recess using details for sound, touch, and sight, but not the word wet.
- Read three student sentences aloud and have classmates hold up fingers for which one creates the clearest picture.
- Bring in a snack, leaf, or school object and have students describe it like a writer, not a label maker.
