The Standard
Pose and respond to specific questions by making comments that contribute to the discussion and elaborate on the remarks of others.
Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts
What This Standard Means
Students need to ask focused questions, answer classmates clearly, and add comments that move a conversation forward. They should connect their ideas to what someone else said, not just wait for their turn or repeat their own point.
Mastery looks like a student saying, “I agree with Maya because…” or “Can you explain what you meant by…” and then adding evidence or a new idea. Students often get stuck giving vague comments like “I think so too,” asking off-topic questions, or changing the subject instead of building on a peer’s remark.
Ways to Teach It
- Use discussion cards labeled question, add on, evidence, and clarify during a short book club talk about one chapter.
- Ask students to write one response starting with, “I want to add to what ___ said because…” after partner discussion.
- During a five-minute circle talk, tally each student’s specific question and one comment that builds on a peer’s idea.
- Connect to a team meeting by having students discuss playground improvements and respond directly to classmates’ suggestions.
