What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students plan and draft a multi-paragraph piece around one focused thesis. They organize supporting ideas, add relevant explanation, revise for unity, and keep the tone and point of view consistent.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The introduction presents a focused thesis, and each paragraph develops one connected part of that thesis. Details are explained, ideas follow a logical order, and the writing keeps a formal tone and consistent point of view.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may write about a broad topic without making a clear claim. They may repeat ideas instead of explaining them, or include details that do not support the thesis. Informal wording and shifts between first, second, and third person are also common.
How to Assess It
- Use an exit ticket asking students to write a thesis, three ordered topic sentences, and one supporting detail for each. Have them label their chosen point of view.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups a thesis and mixed paragraph strips, then have them arrange the strips and explain how each paragraph supports the thesis.
Ask students to explain which details belong in an essay arguing for later school start times and which details should be removed.
Play Thesis Match by having teams pair topic sentences, evidence cards, and explanation cards with the thesis they best support.
Have students draft a formal proposal for one realistic school improvement, using a clear thesis, ordered reasons, and a consistent point of view.
