What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students decide where one complete thought ends and another begins. They punctuate sentences correctly and fix ideas joined with only a comma or no punctuation.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students write complete sentences with clear boundaries and correct end punctuation. They repair comma splices and run-ons by using a period, semicolon, or comma with a coordinating conjunction.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may join two independent clauses with only a comma. They may also mistake a long sentence for a run-on or add periods where ideas are incomplete.
How to Assess It
- Give an exit ticket with one comma splice and one run-on. Ask students to correct each sentence and label the repair they used.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs sentence strips with independent clauses, punctuation cards, and conjunction cards, then have them build three correct sentence combinations.
Ask students to explain how punctuation changes the meaning and pace of two joined ideas, then write one example of each repair.
Play Sentence Repair Relay, where teams correct projected run-ons using periods, semicolons, or commas with coordinating conjunctions.
Have students edit a mock text message, email, or announcement that contains comma splices and run-ons.
