What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students examine different media forms to find the intended audience, purpose, and main message. They identify techniques such as images, sound, word choice, color, layout, and emotional appeals, then judge how well those choices work.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify the audience, purpose, message, and key features of an advertisement, video, poster, or website. They judge effectiveness and support their opinion with specific evidence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse the topic with the message or assume all media present facts. They may call a message effective because they like it, without citing specific words, images, sounds, or design choices.
How to Assess It
- Give students a print advertisement and ask: Who is the audience, what is the message, and which two features make it effective or ineffective?
