What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students give a clear, ordered talk about a text, topic, or opinion. They choose words that fit the audience, avoid stereotypes, and clarify possible double meanings.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student presents an opening, connected details, and a closing, using transitions to guide listeners. The student replaces stereotypes with precise descriptions and explains words that could have multiple meanings.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think respectful intent makes a stereotype acceptable. They may use broad labels, vague terms, or words with double meanings without considering how listeners could interpret them.
How to Assess It
- Ask: “Give a one-minute opinion on school uniforms with a clear opening, two reasons, and a closing.” Listen for precise, respectful wording.

Ways to Teach It
In pairs, sort statement cards as precise, vague, or stereotyped, then revise each weak statement before presenting it aloud.
Write two versions of a class rule explanation, then discuss which words fit the audience and avoid unfair assumptions.
Play Ambiguous Word Challenge, where students draw a multiple-meaning word and give two sentences that make each meaning clear.
Revise a school announcement to remove vague labels and assumptions, then record a clear 30-second version for classmates.
