What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify the main events, ideas, or steps in an informational text. They summarize them in order and explain causes and results with clear connecting words.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students give a brief, accurate summary that includes only the main events, ideas, or steps. They use words such as “next,” “because,” and “as a result” to show clear connections.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may copy sentences, include every detail, or list facts without showing how they connect. They may also assume that one event caused another simply because it happened first.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short paragraph about a volcanic eruption. Ask them to write a three-sentence summary using “first,” “because,” and “as a result.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs mixed sentence strips from a simple procedure, then have them order the strips and write a two-sentence summary.
Ask, “Did the second event happen after the first, or because of it?” Students explain their answer with text evidence.
Play a signal-word sort using cards labeled with words such as first, later, because, therefore, and finally.
Read the school fire drill directions, then have students summarize the steps and explain why two safety steps are included.
