What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students ask and answer questions about characters, events, time, and setting. They also use story clues to explain how something happened or why a character acted.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students answer questions with accurate story details. They ask relevant questions and explain simple inferences using words or pictures from the text.

Common Misconceptions

Students may guess instead of using a story detail. They may confuse where with when, or answer a why question by repeating what happened.

How to Assess It

Read a short story aloud, then ask, “Where did the story happen?” and “Why did the character leave?” Students must name a supporting detail.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs picture cards from a familiar story, then have them match each card to a who, where, or why question.

  2. After reading, ask, “Why did the character make that choice?” Students write one sentence and point to a supporting clue.

  3. Use a question cube labeled who, what, when, where, how, and why; students roll and ask a partner about the story.

  4. Stage a missing lunchbox scene, then have students ask questions and use visible clues to explain what probably happened.
